Although, the name gladius brings to mind the image of the gladiator, this is only partially correct. The gladiator used a variation of the gladius that was shorter than the sword used by the Roman soldier. Typically the gladius was used with the scutum (square Roman shield). The sword was used primarily for stabbing strikes, but the sword was also capable of slashing motions. The sword was so devastating that during the war with Macedonia the soldiers of the Macedonian army were terrified of the sword after just seeing the wounds it inflicted.
